Making Rain
I had fun with a little experiment in the green classroom involving ice, two pans and the stove. First I started water on to boil in which steam was called evaporation of water into the air. I then put ice in a metal pie pan. I held the pan over the steam and drops form on the bottom of the pan. This is called condensation. Like on a window when it is cold outside. Slowly drops formed on the bottom of the pan and started to fall making rain!! This is called precipitation.

At the green classroom we made flower manadalas or Rangoli is a traditional decorative folk art from India. These are decorative designs made on floors of living rooms and courtyards during Hindu festivals and are meant as sacred welcoming areas for the Hindu deities. First we painted a shape on the floor and then we cut up green leaves, roses and all the spectrum of colors from the garden to make our flowers on the floor. All the classes participated and then sang a song to commemorate its destruction.

Today we made leaf rubbings with crayon and they turned out quite well, all the age groups were able to make them without difficulty. First we put the leaf under the paper and then positioned it on the page. Then we rubbed a crayon without paper on it’s flat side. It makes quite an impression! We varied it with different colored paper and crayon. Many children made several. Then we were able to see the veins in the leaf very clearly. Then we took the magnify glass and looked at the veins on the leaf. Christmas wreath
I gathered some grapevine and wrapped it around itself to form a wreath. Then I gathered rosemary, vine with red berries, artemesia, sage, Cyprus, pine bows. The children stuffed them in under the vines to form a nice shape. Then they helped me tie it with wire to hold together. Some of the children made pictures with a tree. We then made a sign that said Merry Christmas from the green classroom. I took it to the office and they hung it above the door. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! Today I did flower arranging at the health center with the residents. We did things alittle differently by using a ikebana style structures using stems inside the vases and bowls. It was awe inspiring seeing the flowers just stand up with the very simple way residents put the flowers in. So minimal effort was needed to make this happen on their part. We had crysanthemums or white yellow, red/brown. We also had dalias of pink. These made the residents remember old times. One of the residents was playing old melodies on the piano… Potting plants
Today I brought Aloe Vera plants and some tropicals from Susan’s greenhouse. I had some small pots with trays so they could be watered. The residents put the roots in the pots and then filled them with dirt. They needed some encouragement but it was slowly done. After we had twenty new plants. Some went to the residents rooms and some went to staff. The plants really brightened the place. Gosh this was a fun activity!
We pretended to be dirt and then a seed and then a sprout and then a tree, which had leaves which fell back to the ground and made dirt! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vElZryXfVY#action=share New sprouts
Today at the green classroom. We noticed our newly planted seeds are starting to come up. They are so cute. We planted lettuce, radish, carrots, beets and peas. We have been busy weeding and watering. Little bit rainy
Today in the green classroom, we went for a nature walk to look at leaves. We saw different varieties of oak, a cypress tree and many pecan trees. We found lichen, seeds from a redbud tree, and buckeye. We found many galls on the back of oak leaves. We put all our finds in a box to make leaf rubbings next week. In the next class we talked about how a leaf is a factory in which the sunlight is turned into food for the tree and oxygen for all of us to breath and then we took a deep breath of the fresh air from the trees. Flower arranging
Today Bill Doran gave us beautiful roses, carnations to make flower arrangements with at Westminster Manor. The residents cut the flowers and picked which ones would go in their vase. They they arranged them to their satisfaction. The results were amazing. |
